Natya, Music, Yoga & Kalari
Natya
The philosophy of Natya at Bharata Kalanjali incorporates the key elements from Kalakshetra blending it with experiences and innovation of the founders. Further, the institution now imbibes elements reflecting the changing social fabric, technology advances and the demand of the younger generation through the next generation of management at the institution. The approach is to lead the students through today’s lens to search and understand yesterday’s essence of Natya which is at its core a way of living. Students are initially disciplined into their rigour of the divine art and as they gain proficiency are encouraged to bring in their personalities and explore Natya within themselves. The classes at BK integrate Natya with sangeetham and yoga, providing the students with an opportunity for all-round development.
Music
Sangeetham as a performing art lends a unique sense of collaboration when fused in an appropriate manner with Natya. The language of music helps the dancer appreciate the sense of rhythm, the emotion and the connection with the audience in ensuring completeness. Classes at BK are filled with arts in all senses. Our students engage with music and dance simultaneously, singing along to their adavus against the beat of our trademark metronome. Integrating Swarams with their footsteps, our BK students are proving that Natya is so much more than movement.
Yoga
The well-established connections between Yoga and Natya have been researched and documented by many over the years. And we at BK firmly believe in that connection. The heightened physical well-being is a known aspect of Yoga while connecting the mind, body, and breath is a more self-experiential process. Increased focus and discipline, along with the ability to channelize one’s thought process and emotions are the takeaways seen on one’s own artistic creations and learnings of pure Natya.
With yoga being tailored to the needs of performing artists, there is an inclination to focus on the spine for posture and flexibility, and the movement of prana when one feels synchronised with all parts of the body while performing.
Kalari
Practicing Kalari instils in the student a strong sense of discipline, and strengthens the body and muscles. Kalari conditions the body in a way that translates into decisive, clean cut, geometric movements, and precise straight lines and angles in Natya, enhancing the visual aesthetics of the dance.
The Kalari classes at BK are committed to not only preserving but also maintaining and passing on the knowledge of this ancient artform to the next generation. Kalari classes will contribute to holistic development, including physical and emotional ability, as well as spiritual growth to our students.
